Glass is unique amongst building materials because of its ability to transmit light.
Glass enables the window to perform its two major functions of letting light in and providing view out, whilst keeping the building weather tight.
It provides the ability of one space to 'borrow' light from another space, and for visual contact between them.
The ability of glass to transmit and control the flow of light gives it a special place in the Specifier's repertoire. Light is of decisive importance in experiencing architecture. Daylight and sunlight create shadow, reveal form, enhance colour perception and produce variability which adds interest and lifts spirits.
The skilful and sympathetic use of natural light elevates building into architecture. The view through windows keeps us in contact with the outside world. The changing strength and direction of daylight and sunlight not only enrich the internal environment but maintain our psychological linkage with the rhythms of the natural world.
The ability of glass to transmit light is the material's major primary function, and it is fair to say that in all reality, all other functions - be they in the areas of environmental control, fire resistance, safety and security, privacy and decoration or mechanical strength-are subordinate to this. When the need is to provide light or vision, the solution is to use glass; the only debate is which glass to use.
