How to find and order your FENSA certificate

What is a FENSA certificate?

FENSA is a government-authorised scheme that monitors building regulation compliance for replacement windows and doors. If you are buying or selling a property that has had replacement windows or doors installed since 1st April 2002, the seller will be asked by the conveyancing solicitor to provide the purchaser with a FENSA certificate.

Not having this important document can hold up the sale of the property. Therefore,  please make sure that you receive a FENSA certificate if you have had (or are planning to have) any replacement windows or doors installed in your home. You should receive this within a couple of months after the work is carried out, if not, check online at https://www.fensa.org.uk/homeowners that your installer did register the work they carried out on your property with FENSA.

What does your FENSA certificate cover?

Your FENSA certificate provides proof that your window or door installations comply with building regulations, use energy-efficient materials and are registered with the local council.

Importantly, the certificate also means that the installer’s warranty is insured.

What is and isn’t covered by the FENSA certificate?

FENSA covers the replacement of external windows, doors, roof windows and roof lights, against the relevant building regulations. (Note that specific requirements have to be met).

FENSA doesn’t cover conservatories, porches, new builds, extensions, repairs (frame not included) and commercial properties.

Finding and ordering your FENSA certificate

Double glazing manufacturers and installers do not issue FENSA certificates, so as a consequence do not have copies of them as these are issued directly by FENSA to each retail windows and doors customer.

To find and order your FENSA certificate for windows and doors installed in your home after April 2002, visit https://forms.fensa.org.uk/fensa-certificate,

Enter the property’s postcode along with the house number or name. You can also search by the FENSA certificate ID number, if known.

As long as your installer registered your installation at the time they carried out the work, this should bring up your address, the work that was undertaken (i.e. number of windows & doors) and the FENSA ID number.

Simply complete the details and pay online. FENSA will then send you a replacement certificate in about 6-7 working days.

There is also the option to pay by cheque – just click on the tab to the right of the ‘online payments’ tab for instructions.

If you can’t find your FENSA certificate on their website. There is help available here.

Ordering a FENSA certificate online is often much quicker and less expensive than asking your solicitor to do this for you. Solicitors tend to send a cheque by post, which needs to clear before the certificate is sent out, plus it is likely they will make a charge for doing this.

You can contact FENSA via their website regarding a range of queries at https://forms.fensa.org.uk/contact-us or call them on 020 7645 3700
